The contract signed with Las Vegas Events in 2015 keeps the Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas through 2024 and raises prize money significantly over that decade. It is telecast to more than 55 million households on CBS Sports Network.
The Top 15 contestants in the standard rodeo events – bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping (headers and heelers), saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, WPRA barrel racing and bull riding – qualify to compete at the Wrangler NFR based on money won during the regular season including Wrangler Champions Challenge events presented by Justin Boots, the Justin Boots Playoffs and Championships presented by Wrangler, the 12 RAM Circuit Finals Rodeos and the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, and for many bull riders, PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour earnings. At the conclusion of the Wrangler NFR, the sport’s world champions are determined based on total season earnings – what they win during the Wrangler NFR added to what they won during the regular season, before the Wrangler NFR.
Last year, Brewster resident and Gonzaga University graduate Alexandria (Allie) Burgett was one of three singers chosen by popular online vote to sing the National Anthem at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas, Nev.
Burgett, who was a 22-year-old Gonzaga senior at the time, sang the Anthem at the Dec. 9 performance in the Thomas and Mack Center before 20,000 rodeo fans. She enjoyed the experience so much that she decided to enter the competition for a repeat performance again this year.
Out of thousands who applied and went through the elimination process between August 1 and Oct. 5, Burgett made it into the final eight candidates. This year the NFR narrowed the voting down to only two finalists, and Burgett just missed the cut announced on Oct. 6.
Burgett graduated Gonzaga in May 2017, with a major in Political Science and minor in Criminal Justice.
Jose Vitor Leme, a Brazilian, clinched the 2017 World Finals event (average/aggregate) title. He was the only rider who stayed on all six bulls during the Las Vegas championships. Leme, who also won the PBR’s Rookie of the Year title, earned $416,000 during the World Finals.
For the second consecutive year, SweetPro’s Bruiser (D&H Cattle Co./Buck Cattle Co.) clinched the PBR’s 2017 World Champion Bull title.
Though Lockwood’s success this year has been a big hit with fans, his 2017 world title victory was anticlimactic. He won the World Finals’ first three rounds and then was bucked off his last three bulls. He received his last two zeros on Sunday.
Burgett didn’t wait for a college degree to enter the world of business. She started a custom woodworking business called Allie Burgett Custom Signs during her sophomore year at Brewster High School.
“I do not have as much time as I used to to keep it up, but I do my best because it is a really fun, creative outlet for me,” said Burgett, now employed at Thomason Law and Justice in Pateros.
Burgett has solid area roots with a father who was Pateros born and graduated Pateros High School and a mother raised in Brewster and a BHS alum. Her siblings include older brother, Chase, 27, younger sister, Claire, 17, and 12-year-old younger brother, Blake.
On the National Cutting Horse Association circuit, April Widman of Weatherford is ranked No. 1 in the non-pro world title race with $98,253 in regular season earnings. Kylie Knight Rice of Weatherford is ranked No. 2 with $82,502.
In the open division standings, Eazee E, which is owned by Kevin and Sydney Knight of Scottsdale, Az., is ranked No. 2 in the world race with $96,929. Deluxe Checks, which is owned by Louisiana residents Amanda and Rhein Standish, is No. 1 with $110,704. Austin Shepard is among three riders who have competed on Deluxe Checks this season.
